Visa-free entry or e-VOA: which one do I need for Indonesia?

Updated 30 October 2026 · 4 min read · Facts as of October 2026

Quick answer

Visa-free entry is for nationals of ASEAN and other exempt countries: 30 days, no fee, but it cannot be extended or converted. The e-VOA is for nationals of the visa-on-arrival list: 30 days, extendable once to 60, applied for online before you fly. If there is any chance you will want to stay longer than 30 days, choose the e-VOA.

Visa-free entry (A1)

Nationals of ASEAN member states and a number of other exempt countries can enter Indonesia without a visa for up to 30 days. It costs nothing, but the stay is fixed: it cannot be extended and cannot be changed into another permit while you are in the country. If you want to stay longer you have to leave and come back on a different visa.

Electronic Visa on Arrival (B1)

Nationals of countries on Indonesia's visa-on-arrival list can apply online before travelling and receive the e-VOA by email. It covers tourism, meetings and short business visits for 30 days and can be extended once for a further 30 days. Applying before you fly means you skip the visa-on-arrival queue at the airport.

Which list am I on?

Both lists change, and some nationalities appear on both. Tell us your nationality and travel dates and we confirm your eligibility before you book. Checking takes minutes and avoids being turned away at the gate.

Neither one lets you work

Visa-free entry and the e-VOA are for visiting only. Taking up employment, or doing hands-on work for an Indonesian business, requires a work visa and KITAS arranged by an employer.

Visa For Indonesia is a private visa-assistance service, not the Indonesian government. Rules, fees and eligibility change; the figures below are correct as of October 2026 and you can always check or apply directly at evisa.imigrasi.go.id.

Common questions

Can I switch from visa-free entry to an e-VOA after arriving?
No. A visa-free stay cannot be converted. Decide before you travel.
How long does the e-VOA take?
e-VOA and visit visas are usually approved within 3 to 5 working days. Apply at least a week before you fly.
Is the e-VOA valid for business meetings?
Yes, for meetings and short business visits. It does not permit employment or hands-on work.
