Tourist visa or business visa for Indonesia: C1 vs C2 explained

Updated 30 October 2026 · 5 min read · Facts as of October 2026

Quick answer

C1 is for holidays, visiting family or friends and attending conferences. C2 is for meetings, negotiations, site visits and buying goods. Both are single-entry visit visas issued online before travel, usually within 3 to 5 working days, and both run 60 days with extensions available. Neither allows employment, and doing business on a tourist visa is a deportation offence.

C1 Tourist & Social Visit Visa

The C1 is the standard choice for anyone staying longer than a Visa on Arrival allows, or for nationalities without VOA access. It covers holidays, visiting family or friends and attending conferences. It is issued for 60 days and can be extended in Indonesia up to a total of 180 days.

C2 Business Visit Visa

The C2 covers business activities that do not involve hands-on work: meetings, negotiations, site visits, inspecting or buying goods. It is the right visa for a founder visiting suppliers, a buyer attending a trade show, or an executive meeting an Indonesian partner. Like the C1 it is issued online before travel.

What neither visa allows

Neither the C1 nor the C2 permits employment or receiving income from an Indonesian source. Doing business on a tourist visa is treated as a deportation offence, and working on a business visa is no better. If you will be employed by, or doing hands-on work for, an Indonesian company you need an E23 work visa and KITAS sponsored by that employer.

Travelling often?

If you visit several times a year, a multiple-entry visa saves applying before every trip. The D2 business multiple-entry visa is the most popular: valid for one, two or five years with stays of up to 60 days per entry. There is a tourist equivalent, the D1.

What we need to apply

  • Passport scan with at least six months' validity
  • A recent photo
  • Travel plans and, for the C2, an outline of the business purpose
  • Proof of funds and, where required, an invitation or sponsor letter

Common questions

Can I attend a conference on a C1?
Yes. Attending conferences is a listed C1 activity. Speaking or training at a commercial event is a different category, the C10 business-event speaker visa.
How long does a C1 or C2 take?
Usually 3 to 5 working days once the documents are complete. We give an estimate for your case, not a guaranteed date.
Can I extend a C2?
Most single-entry visit visas, including the C1 and C2, can be extended in Indonesia subject to eligibility. We check your category and file before the deadline.
