From KITAS to KITAP: getting permanent residence in Indonesia
Updated 30 October 2026 · 5 min read · Facts as of October 2026
A limited-stay permit (KITAS) can be converted to permanent residence (KITAP) after three consecutive years, with a police clearance. Former Indonesian citizens, foreign spouses of Indonesians already on a KITAS, and adult children of mixed marriages can apply directly. A KITAP lasts five years, renews without limit, and carries a mandatory yearly presence report.
The standard route: three years on a KITAS
Work, investor and most other KITAS holders become eligible for a KITAP after three consecutive years on a KITAS. The conversion is filed while you are in Indonesia and a police clearance is required. Breaks in the chain of permits can reset the clock, which is one reason to renew on time.
Direct KITAP, no conversion
Three groups can apply for permanent residence without the three-year wait: former Indonesian citizens, foreign spouses of Indonesians who are already on a KITAS (after two years of marriage), and adult children of mixed marriages.
What a KITAP gives you
- Five years of residence per permit, renewable indefinitely
- No annual permit renewal, unlike the KITAS
- A multiple re-entry permit so you can travel freely
The yearly report
KITAP holders must file an annual presence report, due 14 working days before each anniversary of the permit. Missing it causes problems at renewal, so we add it to your reminder schedule.
