Married to an Indonesian? The spouse KITAS (E31A) and the path to KITAP
Updated 30 October 2026 · 5 min read · Facts as of October 2026
Foreign spouses of Indonesian nationals qualify for the E31A family KITAS, sponsored by the Indonesian spouse. It renews every one to two years and converts to permanent residence (KITAP) after two years of marriage, without the usual three-year wait.
Who qualifies
The E31A is for foreign husbands and wives of Indonesian citizens in a legally recognised marriage. Children of the marriage use the E31C (child of a mixed marriage) and foreign-national children of an Indonesian parent use the E31F. If your spouse is a foreigner holding a KITAS or KITAP rather than an Indonesian citizen, the category is E31B instead.
What your Indonesian spouse provides
- Identity card (KTP)
- Family card (KK)
- Marriage certificate
- A sponsorship letter
We coordinate with your spouse directly so the paperwork is prepared correctly the first time. A family KITAS typically takes a few weeks once the sponsor documents are complete.
Renewals
The spouse-of-citizen KITAS renews every one to two years. The government fee is IDR 2,000,000 for a one-year permit and IDR 4,000,000 for two years, as of October 2026.
Permanent residence after two years
Foreign spouses of Indonesians who are already on a KITAS can apply for permanent residence (KITAP) after two years of marriage, without the three-year conversion wait that applies to work and investor KITAS holders. The KITAP is issued for five years and renews indefinitely, with a mandatory presence report each year due 14 working days before the anniversary.
Working on a spouse KITAS
A family KITAS is a residence permit, not a work permit. Taking up employment requires the employer to arrange a work visa. Tell us your plans and we will explain the options for your situation.
